North Korean Defector Lee's Story

Updated: Jul 8

North Korean defector and missionary Lee recently shared his testimony at the Korean Church of the Nazarene in Massachusetts.

Lee’’s Story

Lee’s father and brother both suffered and died from malnutrition during the North Korean famine. Hoping to find food for his family, Lee escaped from North Korea at the age of seventeen and received help from a church near the Chinese border. It was there that Lee came to faith and accepted Jesus.

Lee knew, however, that his family and friends were still suffering and dying in North Korea without any knowledge of God. So he returned home, bringing food—and the good news of Jesus—with him.

Eventually, Lee was reported for spreading the gospel in his hometown, and he was sentenced to fifteen years of forced labor in a prison camp. But Lee remained faithful, and in time, God answered his prayers and led him all the way to South Korea and then to the United States alongside Caleb Mission.

We are immensely humbled by Lee’s testimony. May his story encourage us to be thankful and to always persevere in prayer!

If you would like to hear Hwang’s full testimony, please contact Caleb Mission to arrange an event in the Fall.
